München Hauptbahnhof is the main train station in Munich and the most centrally located. It gets about 350,000 passengers daily and is one of the busiest railway stations in Germany and Europe. Munich Train Station is served by long distance trains, including the ICE high speed trains, and various regional and local trains, including Munich S-Bahn.
It is also the main junction in Munich U-Bahn (metro) network, with access to 4 metro lines (U1, U2, U4, and U5). The stop’s name in local transport is Hauptbahnhof.
Munich Train Station is situated at Bahnhofplatz (literally Train Station Square), close to Karlsplatz, Lenbachplatz, and Alter Botanischer Garten (Old Botanical Garden). Important streets near Munich Train Station include Bayer Strasse (in the south), Arnulfstrasse, and Marsstrasse (both the latter are in the north). The train station is 2 stops by S-Bahn from Marienplatz, the central point of Munich inner city.
The area near Munich Train Station is very popular as a place to stay, thanks to its proximity to most attractions and key buildings in the centre and the unrivalled public transport access to anywhere in Munich. It also has the highest concentration of hotels and accommodation facilities in the city. You can find hotels in any direction from the station – north, east (towards the inner city), or south (the main hotel district – see below). A bit fewer hotels are only in the west (direction to outside from the centre).
There is a real hotel district just on the southern side of the train station (south of Bayerstrasse). Hotels seem to be more than half of all buildings in some of these streets – especially in Schillerstrasse, Goethestrasse, Senefelderstrasse, Schwanthalerstrasse, and Adolf-Kolping-Strasse. Here you can find any class of hotels, from youth hostels to 4 star and 5 star hotels, including well-known brands like Marriott or Best Western.
